In the West African country of Liberia, diverse cultures are intertwined, like the branches of its vast tropical rainforest. Robertsport emerges as a destination pulsating with unique traditions and warm hospitality. As you delve into the heart of this coastal fishing village, the warmth of the people and their ways will embrace you.

The Vai People: Melodies of Tradition

Robertsport, a jewel nestled along the Northwestern Liberian coast, is primarily home to the gracious Vai people. The Vai are one of Liberia's 16 major ethnic groups. While the majority of Vai live in Liberia, they also reside in neighboring Sierra Leone. Most Vai are Muslim, while some practice Christianity. The Vai are renowned for their connection to music. Special occasions come alive with traditional songs and rhythmic beats. The Vai make up the majority of people living in Robertsport; however, people of other ethnic groups like the Gola, Mende, Mandingo, Fante, Klao [Kru], and Bassa also live in Robertsport.

Life and Livelihood by the Ocean

Life in Robertsport is deeply connected to the ocean and Lake Piso, Liberia's largest lake. The livelihoods of the locals depend on fishing, which is not just a means of sustenance but a way of life. Families contribute together in this endeavor, with men and boys casting nets into the deep while women clean and sell the day's catch. Beyond sustenance, the ocean provides a source of entertainment and fun. Robertsport is known for its surfing, with various waves conducive for a fun day of catching waves. Locals enjoy this pastime, as do tourists who visit Robertsport.

Robertsport's Hospitality

In Robertsport, hospitality abounds. The locals warmly welcome curious travelers, eager to share the beauty of their place and forge new connections. Unlike bustling tourist hubs, Robertsport retains an authentic charm, fostering an atmosphere of genuine enthusiasm for cross-cultural exchanges. Many locals, especially the young people of Robertsport, will be excited to get to know you.

A Glimpse into Liberia's Resilience

While Robertsport radiates warmth, it's crucial to acknowledge the broader context of Liberia's challenges. The 2023 Human Development Report sheds light on the complexities of poverty, with over 52.3 percent of Liberians facing multidimensional poverty in 2019. The aftermath of a 14-year civil war, coupled with issues like corruption, malaria, the 2014 Ebola epidemic, and the recent COVID-19 pandemic, has tested the resilience of the Liberian people. Yet, amidst adversity, there is an unwavering desire to rebuild and rediscover peace.

Most of the average household income in Liberia goes to essential sustenance, with a significant emphasis on food. In larger cities like Monrovia, individuals may approach you to request money. Such interactions may be disconcerting for those unaccustomed to them; however, they are notably less prevalent in Robertsport and other smaller towns across the country. Tip - If you are uncomfortable with people who beg, a gracious way to manage it is to smile and say “Next time”.

Understanding Liberia's struggles is vital to cultivating meaningful connections during your Liberian adventure. As you embark on your dream Liberian holiday, let the spirit of resilience and hope guide your journey through the captivating landscape of Robertsport. Your tourism dollars will go far in helping the country on its tourism journey.
